The Department of Home Affairs is a central policy agency, providing coordinated strategy and policy leadership for Australia's national and transport security, cyber security, border, immigration, multicultural affairs, emergency management and trade related functions.
Immigration Programs Division delivers the permanent migration and temporary visa programs to maximise the long-term economic and social benefits to Australia across the Skilled, Family and Resident Return visa programs, and through Temporary entry to support tourism, education and international relations.
Caseload Risk and Integrity Program Overview
Offshore integrity teams, in collaboration with integrity teams in Australia, are part of a global caseload risk and integrity network. The primary role of the Caseload Risk and Integrity team is to identify tactical, entity or caseload specific risks in the visa programs processed in their location/region and to also support onshore processing locations in identifying risks related to nationals of the Pacific region.
The Caseload Risk and Integrity Team in Wellington works closely with other teams in the Pacific located in Suva and Port Moresby.
About the position
With general direction, the Senior Locally Engaged Integrity Officer (LEIO) works to established policies and procedures to analyse visa and citizenship caseloads in line with integrity unit responsibilities. Working as part of a team, the position is responsible for managing the identification and reporting of risk and integrity issues within a broad range of visa caseloads.
The key responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:
- Coordinate the team’s end-to-end pre-travel assessment process.
- Manage moderately complex cases, including enquiries from clients.
- Coordinate a streamlined character assessment process, in collaboration with the Visa Applicant Character Consideration Unit (VACCU).
- Liaise with Suva’s Complex Case/VACCU team on moderately complex cases.
- Undertake quality assurance activities to ensure the accuracy and appropriateness of information and procedures.
- Perform basic research and analysis and manipulate data to enable accurate reporting.
- Build and maintain relationships, within defined parameters, with New Zealand agencies, including the Department of Internal Affairs (on matters relating to Citizenship, gang activity and other matters of common interest), Immigration New Zealand and New Zealand Police.
- Analyse country of origin information to understand the context, risk, veracity and genuineness of visa and citizenship applications, particularly in relation to child custody and criminal convictions matters.
- Perform system interrogation and open-source research to establish the identity of applicants and/or persons of interest and the veracity of their visa and citizenship claims/eligibility for entry to Australia.
- Undertake research and analysis activities to identify emerging risks and/or trends in visa application caseloads and identify training needs for visa processing officers.
- Supervise one Locally Engaged Integrity Officer, including monitoring work practices, setting of priorities and development of local procedures.
- Contribute to the implementation of improvement initiatives.
Qualifications/Experience
- Tertiary qualifications or relevant experience in equivalent roles.
- Excellent written and oral English language skills
- Experience in the use of Microsoft Excel to analyse and interrogate data would be an advantage.
- Well-developed communication and liaison skills, including demonstrated ability to liaise with multiple stakeholders.
- Well-developed analytical skills, including an ability to undertake the identification and analysis of data and contribute to high quality written reporting.
- Experience with assessing information and making decisions based on legislation
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with others, in a culturally diverse work environment.
