About the Agency/Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT)
The role of DFAT is to advance the interests of Australia and Australians internationally. This involves strengthening Australia’s security, enhancing Australia’s prosperity, delivering an effective and high-quality overseas aid program and helping Australian travellers and Australians overseas.
The department provides foreign, trade and development policy advice to the Australian Government. DFAT also works with other Australian government agencies to drive coordination of Australia’s pursuit of global, regional and bilateral interests.
About the position:
The Public Affairs & Communications Officer assists in delivering the Australian High Commission’s (AHC) public diplomacy program. Working to the Senior Public Diplomacy Officer, this position supports the AHC’s media and social media activity, assists in the delivery of public events and provides administration support.
The key responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:
Media/Social Media
- Manage the AHC’s official Facebook and Twitter accounts - developing creative content, monitoring activity and co-ordinating social media campaigns.
- Monitor and maintain the AHC’s website - ensure content is relevant, engaging and up-to-date.
- Monitor New Zealand media, manage print and digital subscriptions, and arrange transcripts where required.
- Assist with media arrangements for ministerial and high-level visits and events.
Public Diplomacy/Events
Public Diplomacy/Events
- Co-ordinate AHC events, including liaising with sponsors and service providers, management of guest lists, development of theming and managing event logistics.
- Support the AHC’s cultural diplomacy program, including liaising with stakeholders, organisers and artists.
Administration
- Provide administrative support, including maintenance of the contacts database, financial administration for public diplomacy funds and conduct research tasks as directed.
- Provide support to the Senior Public Diplomacy Officer and other areas of the AHC
- Undertake other tasks as directed.
Skills and Qualifications
- Relevant qualifications and industry experience.
- Proficiency in communications tools including photography and videography.
- Strong administrative skills and confidence working with Microsoft Office products.
- Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
- Good people skills and an ability to work collaboratively with stakeholders and teams.
- Initiative, drive and an ability to complete tasks independently

- Annual salary NZ$62,340 plus KiwiSaver employer contribution equivalent to 6% of salary.
