About The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade

The Australian High Commission is the official representative of the Australian Government in New Zealand.  We provide a range of services to the public, including consular and passports and cultural relations services.  We also act on behalf of various Australian Government authorities by representing Australia’s interest to local, regional and multilateral government and business organisations in New Zealand.

The role of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) is to advance the interests of Australia and Australians internationally.  This involves strengthening Australia’s security, enhancing Australia’s prosperity, delivering an effective and high-quality overseas aid program and helping Australian travellers and Australians overseas.  The department provides foreign, trade and development policy advice to the Australian Government.  DFAT also works with other Australian government agencies to drive coordination of Australia’s pursuit of global, regional and bilateral interests.

 

About the position

The Public Affairs and Communication Officer assist in delivering the Australian High Commission (AHC) Wellington’s public diplomacy program. Working with the Public Diplomacy Manager, this position leads social media activity, assists in the delivery of public events and provides administration support.  

 

Key responsibilities of the position include but are not limited to:

  • Support the Public Diplomacy Manager to advise AHC leadership on public diplomacy opportunities.
  • Support the Public Diplomacy Manager to deliver events, including liaising with sponsors, managing service providers, administering guest lists, and delivering event logistics (including after hours). 
  • Assist with media engagement for visits to New Zealand and events associated with the AHC.   
  • Provide administrative support, including procurement, contracts, correspondence, and records management.
  • Monitor New Zealand media, including preparing a daily summary of articles relevant to Australia. 
  • Monitor and maintain the AHC website, ensuring content is relevant, engaging and up to date. 
  • Manage the AHC’s official Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and X accounts by developing creative content, monitoring activity and maximising impact. 
  • Take photos and videos to be used in AHC social media material.
  • Create graphic design material for social media and events.
  • Other tasks as directed, including research or representational duties.

 

Qualifications and Experience

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. 
  • Good people skills and an ability to work collaboratively with stakeholders and teams. 
  • Initiative, drive and an ability to complete tasks independently. 
  • Relevant qualifications in media and/or communication fields and industry experience.  
  • Proficiency in communications tools including photography and videography. 
  • Strong administrative skills and confidence working with Microsoft Office products.        
  • Understanding of the relationship between Australia and New Zealand.

  • Annual salary of NZD $71,648.88, plus employer KiwiSaver contributions equivalent to 6.5% of salary
